CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Granny opened the door to the phone store. âDid you see that? That man was taking a picture of me. Call the police. I want to know who he was.â
The young man behind the counter looked up as Granny entered. âYeh, well, everyoneâs taking pictures now, ya know. No oneâs safe. Might end up on SciffScaff, the online video place. You never know whoâs takinâ your picture. Where ya doinâ something stupid?â
âAh, no.â
âThen why should you care? Youâre on camera all the time.â The young man pointed to the ceiling. âLook up, see anything there?â
Granny peered at the ceiling. âAh, no.â
âWell itâs there; right here and here and here.â He pointed as he tapped on the ceiling in different places. âSee that, cameras all over taking your picture.â He walked to the front of the store. He pointed at the light pole right by Grannyâs car. âSee that? Yup, itâs thereââa camera. Iâd say a guy taking your picture is the least of your problems. You can see him. See that man who just passed you in the street? See his hat.â
Granny peered out the window at the man walking down the street.
âItâs taking a picture of you. All he has to do is meet you or follow you and itâs done. Youâre recorded. You donât know what heâs gonna do with that picture. Could be a Sciffscaff guy, and you wouldnât even know it.â The young man stood next to Granny and put his arm around her shoulders, leaned in and whispered. âYou never know whoâs watching you.â
Granny jumped back wishing she hadnât forgotten her umbrella in the car or better yet, she wished she had her knitting needle. He would have seen that she got her point across.
âEnough!â Granny yelled. âI came for a phone and if you donât get me one soon, well, I donât want to be responsible for what happens.â Granny grabbed his arm and led him over to the window. âYou think Iâm an old woman and youâre gonna scare me, do ya? Well, let me let you in on a little secret. Iâm not old; this is a disguise and Iâm undercover. See that car out there? It is not just a car. See those headlights? Theyâre not just headlights. They can take someone out in a second by a flip of a switch thatâs in my pocket. Granny indicated she was holding something in her pocket. See that car door? If it opens by itself, well, I donât want to be responsible. Get me a phone!!! Lives are at stake.â Granny took a tighter grip on his arm. âDo you understand?â
âRight, right. Iâll be back in just a minute. I have just the right phone for you in the back room.â
Granny meandered around the store looking at the fancy electronic tablets, at the phone cases, when she heard the door open and close. Two policeman entered the store and walked up to her.
âIs this the woman who threatened you?â one of the policemen said to the young man who was now standing in the door to the back room.
